Banks and Credit Unions offer checking accounts which may charge you a monthly service fee. To avoid fees, follow these three steps:
- Track the money that you spend with your debit card so that you do not overdraw your account. Spending more money than you have in your account is called “overdrawing” your account.
- When withdrawing money from an ATM, only use your bank’s ATM so that you avoid an ATM service fee.
- Stay above the required “minimum balance” for your checking account. The “minimum balance” is the amount of money your bank requires to be in an account so that you are not charged a maintenance fee.
